The Sauters

Kristy & David
12.19.08

Nate's older sister Kristy got married on Friday--the coldest snowiest day we have had so far! It was freezing at the temple but with everything covered in a blanket of sparkling white it looked lovely. Kristy was a beautiful bride and Dave was a snazzy groom in his pinstripe suit. The reception was laid back and we had a great time eating raspberry cheesecake and chocolate cake--good choice Kristy! Congrats again!

Body Worlds

We went to the Body Worlds exhibit at The Leonardo and it was so interesting! Our bodies are truly incredible. Not only do they have real bodies (click here to read about plastination) but they also have display cases that show actual healthy organs and bones vs. those with cancer, tumors, arthritis, etc. In one of the cases they even had the tiny little bones that are in our inner ear--it was amazing! There was a whole area that talked about the effects of smoking on the body. Then you could commit to stop smoking and drop your commitment paper and your pack of cigarettes into a glass box. There were quite a few inside.

Monday I went to the hospital to be with my grandma while my grandpa had surgery to adjust the peritoneal catheter that he uses for dialysis. (everything went great!) While we were walking around the exhibit I kept thinking about how hard it would be to perform surgery. Things seem so complex once you can see it all. Our guts alone just looked like a big gushy conglomerate of slimy things. Kudos to all of the people who work in the medical profession and are able to make sense of if all in order to prolong lives.

There was also an area that talked all about the heart. It showed the variations in size, and talked about the fact that it is a muscle and needs to be exercised in order to perfom to it's optimum capacity. There was a poster that talked about Lance Armstrong's heart. His resting heart beat is only 33 beats per minute!! Nate and I are definatey motivated to get in better shape.

Overall the exhibit was educational and fascinating--check it out if you get the chance! I think it is showing until January 11th.

Silk

Okay, let me give a brief job update for those who I haven't talked to in awhile before I go into my silk shirt experience. I am no longer working at the adolescent treatment center--It was an enormous learning experience for me and I was able to get the social work hours I needed to apply for the program. Unfortunately, besides being a very emotionally draining job, the schedule they offered just wasn't working with my school/life schedule. I ended up having to work nights and weekends which I realized I just can't do right now.
.
About the time that I realized I needed to find another job Nate's boss Aaron mentioned that his wife needed help with the billing for their company. I could basically make my own schedule and also work from home if necessary. I started training and it worked out so I could take over completely and she could be home with her kids. So, I am currently the billing manager for Salt Lake R.E.O.--which is the company that Aaron started which deals with bank owned foreclosure properties. Nate used to be part of the Salt Lake REO team until he and Aaron started up a property management company called Premier Management of Utah. Now Nate is running Premier Management with Aaron, and Aaron is also the broker, and an agent, for Salt Lake REO. It's fun because Nate and I are in the same office together--he's upstairs and I'm downstairs. Doing the billing for this company has nothing to do with Social Work, and I will only be here until I get my degree, but it gives me the flexibility to take the classes I need to complete the Social Work program. (Since the lovely people at the U insist on making the mandatory classes in the middle of the day!! Hello??? Don't you know that school costs an arm and a leg and people need to work??!!) I am also still filling in at Abode once in awhile if they need me.
.
Now that all that is out--Salt Lake REO had team photos taken the other day. In the memo I got it said that the colors to wear were red, black, or white dress clothes. So I show up in black pants with a white button down shirt with a red tank top underneath so you could see a little red peeking through at the top. Little did I know that no one else decided to wear white so I stuck out like a sore thumb! I looked like frosty the snowman compared to everyone else in their sassy red and black outfits. The photographer looked at me as if I had lobsters growing out of my ears and it was at that moment that one of the other girls said she had brought along an extra shirt. Whew! And then she handed me the shirt. A long sleeved red silky shirt! Don't get me wrong, it probably looked great on her but silk is definately not my thing. I put it on anyway and luckily in the first picture I am pretty much hidden. But in the 2nd picure my silk is on full display. It really doesn't look so bad, other than the fact that it's silky, and shiny, and red.

Merriment

Monday night Nate and I both had a final and we finished early so we decided to come home and celebrate! We got out the Christmas decor, popped open some bubbly, and put The Christmas Story on. Nothing calms me quite like hearing the phrase, "Mommy's little piggy!"
